ABOUT WOMEN is a fascinating series that
investigates the modern Australian woman
in her many ages and stages of life - what
she needs to thrive and survive in the 21st
Century and the obstacles she faces on her
life’s journey.
In 2008 the options for an Australian woman
to do what she wants and to be who she wants
to be are, in theory, limitless. She is
no longer destined to marry the butcher,
the baker or the candlestick maker - she
can choose any of those careers herself
and fulfil family obligations in her spare
time. But is that the reality for most women?
They are still paid less than men, work
more and part-time, bear the brunt of housework,
child rearing and care of elderly parents,
and, under media pressure, still worry about
how they look no matter what their age.
In a ‘post-feminist’ environment,
what have the struggles of ‘Women’s
Lib’ of the 1960s and ‘70s delivered
to today’s women? Has ‘Feminism’
made their lives better or just more complicated?
With different opportunities come different
challenges, so how are women coping in the
contemporary world?
As a companion series to the groundbreaking
About Men, the three episodes chart women’s
major life stages from youth to old age.
Our characters’ compelling stories
of development, achievement, conflict, maturation
and wisdom express the powerful themes underpinning
this timely series. We meet these girls
and women at pivotal times in their lives,
as they come to terms with their identity,
sexuality and relationships. Their stories
are moving, funny, often surprising and
informative. Each episode includes moments
of insight, transformation, diversity of
experience, emotional intensity and revelation.
ABOUT WOMEN celebrates the experiences of
girls and women in their public and private
lives. From a diverse range of cultural,
religious and ethnic backgrounds, girls,
teenagers and women share tales from their
life’s journey. These stories make
for an absorbing and intimate snapshot of
what it means to be female in Australia
today .
